“I’d rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth.” -Steve McQueen
In life, I rarely get my way but driving the Extraterrestrial Highway was definitely the route I wanted to take. I’ve always been fascinated with the mystery of Area 51 ever since I watched X-Files as a kid. I was unable to actually go to Area 51 for obvious reasons but let me share the cool places I found along the mostly empty highway along Nevada’s Route 375 (which is around 2-3 hours away from Las Vegas)
First stop is the famous ET sign which was filled with stickers and magnets but still a cool place to take some photos.
The second stop is the Alien Research Center. It’s mostly a gift shop where you could buy tons of Alien souvenirs. I came to take pictures. I loved the cool design.
The third stop is the black mailbox. Sadly, it’s gone and all that’s left is what you see in the picture below.
The final stop was perfect because I was starving by then. The Little A’Le’Inn is a motel and restaurant located in Rachel, Nevada. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere and I’m not even sure if it has a traffic light.
I had the famous alien burger and homemade potato salad and it was more than enough to satisfy my hunger. The price was reasonable and the owner was very kind and friendly. Lunch was great.
I will be honest. It really is my love for empty highways with barely any cars around right in the middle of nowhere that drew me to drive this road. The experience was unforgettable. But it’s definitely not for everyone. The older I get the more I crave being away from it all. If you ever find yourself in Vegas and want to get away from the noise. I highly recommend it.
My Tips for this Trip:
1. Make sure you have a full tank of gas.
2. There are long stretches without signal. Make sure your car is in good condition before considering this trip.
3. Bring water and food.
4. Bring your camera.
5. If you’re lucky, you might even see an alien.

If I was younger, I would take this journey too. I’m a firm believer in the thought that Earth is not the only planet with intelligent life on it. To be truthful, I’m not too sure how intelligent we are.

If you ever have a chance, take route 90 crossing into Utah from Colorado. It’s an off the beaten path route but there’s a hill/overlook just before Utah border where you can park and look back at the empty road behind you. It’s one of my favorite moments on the road.

Hey Bel, thanks for reading my post. I travel much the same was you. However, for 18 years I did have a companion, a rat terrier affectionatly known as ‘rotten little terrier aka RLT. The desert of the Mojave in late spring was so full of light and desert fragrances…and cholla cactus that attacked RLT. I’ll write about that too.

We just got back from Yellowstone & Grand Teton. There were areas that were crowded & I was ready to get out there. Many places were quiet & serene. It was breathtaking.

Yeah thatโs the only reason why Iโm hesitant to visit Yellowstone. Itโs one of the most beautiful National Parks but also extremely crowded…I try to avoid huge crowds as much as possible ๐

Itโs worth the trip. Honestly, Grand Teton National Park was so much better. A lot of secluded areas to walk. Just have bear spray with you. The high traffic areas are the hot springs, geysers & old faithful. Worth seeing but not for long.

Yeah, the bears are abundant in that area. I probably will like Grand Teton more. I would definitely add it to my list ๐ Thank you!

I remember once driving in Maine from Bangor to Caribou — three hours on Rt 95, about 150 miles. In all that time we saw five other cars in either direction! I get the coolness of an almost empty road ๐ How fun. Thanks for making me aware of this ET stretch too..

“There are long stretches without signal. ”
Couldn’t read that without thinking of Texas! It definitely feels like ‘another world’ and I promised myself I’d never take that route again.
However, my nephew in Nevada has been trying to get his mom and me to visit, soooo…maybe I could work this to my advantage and have an Alien burger! ๐
